The trade name SiBSTAR encompasses a group of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) composed of di- and triblock structures made from styrene and isobutene monomer units.
The individual SiBSTAR types are distinguished based on the ratio of polystyrene to polyisobutylene – that is, the molecular weights of these building blocks. The higher the polystyrene content, the greater the hardness. The higher the polyisobutylene content, the lower the hardness, accompanied by improved barrier and damping properties. In general, a higher total molecular weight results in improved mechanical performance.
Its low hardness – ranging from Shore A 25 to 46 despite the absence of plasticizers – combined with an excellent gas barrier, sets a new benchmark in the world of TPEs. Compared to SEBS, the material offers up to ten times greater impermeability, enabling either new sealing geometries or reduced material usage.
Applications include food packaging, protective films, vibration dampers, medical seals, etc., as well as the modification of other raw materials such as EVOH, TPU, COC, or PA.
Processing is carried out via extrusion or injection molding. SiBSTAR is supplied as transparent, free-flowing granules in 20 kg bags.

SiBSTAR-TPV is used when, in addition to the properties of the SiBSTAR-TPE product group, there are specific requirements arising from static or dynamic loads, or when improved chemical resistance or higher service temperatures are needed.
This material consists of chemically pre-crosslinked polyisobutene in a thermoplastic matrix of PE, PP, or SiBSTAR TPE. The compression set of some of these systems is a record-breaking 13% (22 hours at 121°C). Even under prolonged thermal stress, the compression set is only minimally affected.
It is used for applications such as seals (e.g. wine corks) and liners in the general and pharmaceutical industries. Its purity and oil resistance make it the material of choice for food-contact applications and for modifying or increasing the flexibility of other plastics.
Processing is primarily carried out via injection molding. SiBSTAR-TPV is supplied as granules in 15 kg bags.
